One of the most celebrated Hindu festivals, Diwali (dee-VAH-lee) or Deepavali (dee-PAH-va-lee) commemorates the victory of good over evil during the course of five days. The word refers to rows of diyas — or clay lamps — which are put all around homes and places of worship. The light from these lamps symbolizes the illumination within all of us, which can overcome ignorance, represented by darkness. Devotees gather in local temples, homes, or community centers, to spend time with loved ones, make positive goals, and appreciate life.

Christmas, celebrated annually on December 25, is a sacred religious holiday as well as a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For roughly two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. Christmas Day—which falls on Friday, December 25, 2026—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

Eid al-Fitr, one of the two main festivals in Islam. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting in which Muslims believe God revealed the Qurʾān to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel (Jibrīl). It is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwāl, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar (though the Muslim use of a lunar calendar means that it may fall in any season of the year). Eid al-Fitr is a time of official receptions and private visits, when friends greet one another, and presents are given.

Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is one of Islam’s most important holidays that signifies the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as ordered by Allah. Usually lasting three to four days and celebrated by millions of Muslims worldwide, the holiday begins on the 10th day of the Muslim calendar’s month of Dhul-Hijja, at the time of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

Considered the holiest of the two Eids—the other being Eid al-Fitr, or “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” that commemorates the end of Ramadan—Eid al-Adha is one of two major Muslim holidays celebrated across the globe each year.

In observance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day. Although it has long been celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans.

The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a community space where this spirit of hope lives on. A place where historical events like Juneteenth are shared and new stories with equal urgency are told.
