Aarti Sawhney

Education Philosophy Aarti Sawhney has taught English in New York City public high schools since 2000. As a resource coordinator at CAS, Aarti provides students with academic support as they complete rigorous projects in conjunction with their internships. She also helps them manage new relationships and pursue a variety of professional, personal, and academic goals. Aarti encourages students to step out of their comfort zones and explore a wide variety of internship experiences. In doing so, she has found they often unearth hidden passions and strengths. She joined City as School to be a part of a student-centered learning community that appreciates and nurtures creative, autonomous young adults.

Courses/Internships Aarti supervises internships that focus on service, education, and advocacy through a broad range of activities and agencies. For example, some students create murals to raise awareness and express an opinion about an important issue.  Others assist teachers in early childhood and elementary settings, implementing and evaluating targeted approaches to fostering early development.  Those who love animals participate in their diagnosis, treatment and care at animal hospitals and clinics.

Biography Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Aarti now lives near Prospect Park in Brooklyn. She received a BA in Art History from the University Michigan and an MA in English education from Teacher’s College. She credits her 11th grade English teacher, who coached her through paralyzing shyness, as the inspiration for her own professional path.

Fun Facts Aarti doesn’t have a smartphone and hopes to never have one.
